The funniest mistakes on "Little House on the Prairie"

Melissa Gilbert says that Little House on the Prairie had "glaring and hilarious bloopers and goofs." Gilbert says that many of the mistakes were found by Lennon Parker at PrairieFans.com. Here are some of the funny things that went wrong over the years on Little House on the Prairie.

On the show, Laura Ingalls was pregnant for more than a year.

Gilbert and Parker write in their book My Prairie Cookbook that Laura had been pregnant for more than a year. When she first told people she was pregnant, the weather was warm, maybe in the spring or summer. But by the summer after that, she is still pregnant. Gilbert says she didn't know her character had been pregnant for so long because she didn't notice. Gilbert laughs, "Poor Laura, she's been pregnant for more than a year!"

Colonel Sanders shows up, but he wasn't around yet.

In the eighth season's "Wave of the Future" episode, Nelly Oleson's restaurant changes into a place called Mrs. Sullivan's. But Nelly finds out she signed a contract for a franchise that isn't good for her. Charles and Nels open a restaurant that will compete with Nellie's so they can help her get out of her contract. Their plan works, and she has to close her shop.

Colonel Sanders makes a deal with Harriet so that she can start her own chicken business. But Colonel Sanders wasn't born yet. He didn't come into the world until September 9, 1890. Also, Kentucky Fried Chicken didn't start until the year 1952.

The actors on Little House on the Prairie often ate Kentucky Fried Chicken during dinner scenes, so this could have been a nod to the series. "On Little House, we ate a lot of fried chicken," Gilbert wrote in My Prairie Cookbook. "Cross my heart, it's true: The fried chicken we ate on Little House on the Prairie came from KFC."

People are walking around in the middle of winter without coats on.

In an episode called "Bless All the Dear Children," there is another mistake. In this episode, someone takes Laura's baby. This takes place in Minneapolis around Christmas. This time of year, it's usually very cold in Minneapolis. Everyone, though, is out without a coat.

Gilbert says this probably happened because the show was filmed in the summer in Tucson, Arizona. She says that the weather is "the personification of misery."

During a stunt, a dummy can be seen.

In the fifth season's episode "The Odyssey," "The Odyssey," someone tries to throw Albert off the train. The man tries to hurt Albert, but Laura pushes him off the train before he can. A dummy is thrown off the train during that scene. The stuntman rolls down the hill past the dummy, who is sitting in the grass. We don't know how the editors could have missed this mistake, but it's funny.

In one scene, a closed cabinet is then opened.

In season 3, episode "Little Girl Lost," there was a continuity mistake that the editors didn't catch. Mary shuts one of the cupboards. When the camera moves to Laura, though, the door is open. Gilbert makes fun of the idea that the house might have had ghosts.
