2023 AFCON: The Reason for Osman Bukari's Early Substitution, According to Chris Hughton

Coach Chris Hughton has provided an explanation for the decision to substitute Osman Bukari after only 16 minutes on the pitch. The Red Star Belgrade winger came on as a substitute for Inaki Williams in the 73rd minute.

However, Bukari's short time on the pitch was overshadowed by a crucial mistake that resulted in Mostafa Mohamed scoring. As a result, he was substituted in the 89th minute.

In a post-match statement, Hughton explained that the decision to substitute Bukari was made due to concerns about the player's mindset after the crucial error.

As per his account, the coaching staff reached a mutual decision to withdraw Bukari, considering that they felt the weight of his mistake could have a detrimental effect on his performance.

"Osman Bukari has had an outstanding season and we truly value him as both a person and a player." "After the mistake, emotions can take over, and it was evident when you're close on the touchline," Chris Hughton mentioned in his post-game comments.

"It appeared that the error had some impact on him, considering the intense emotions involved in the game."

As a result, we have decided to implement the change. We want to emphasise that this decision is not meant to be personal or against anyone. We have a great deal of respect for him, and our opinion of him remains unchanged. He is an exceptional player who will continue to thrive," he added.

In the upcoming match, Ghana will be directing their attention towards a vital game against Mozambique, which is set to take place on Monday, January 22, 2024. The match is scheduled to start at 20:00 GMT.
