ECG, GWCL, and NEDCo pay GHC1.2 million in consumer compensation.

 


During the first half of 2023, the ECG and NEDCo paid GHC522,749.74 to customers as a consequence of billing issues, while GWCL paid GHC769,368.43.The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), and Northern Electricity Company (NEDCo) have compensated customers for the first half of 2023 with a total of GHC1,297,118.17.

The amount paid by the three utilities consists of GHC1,299,118.17 in billing adjustments and GHC5,000 in compensation for damages caused to consumers between January and June of 2023.

The ECG and NEDCo paid GHC522,749.74 while GWCL paid GHC769,368.43 as adjustment to customers as a consequence of billing challenges during the first six months of 2023.

ECG and NEDCo paid GHC5,000 in compensation for damages to the properties of electricity customers, while GWCL made no such payment.In contrast, the three utility service providers collected GHC621,742.65 from consumers during the same time period.


Abukari Jabaru, director of regional operations for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), told the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday that the situation demanded "more diligence" from the utilities.

"The utility service providers must promptly respond to and resolve consumer complaints; otherwise, if they accumulate, you'll have to pay an adjustment," he said.

"The staff of utility service providers must also verify whether or not customers owe money to avoid incorrect billing," Jabaru added.

Finished instances

According to data provided by the commission, between January and June 2023, it resolved 6,613 of the 7,123 complaints reported across the 10 administrative regions of PURC. This indicates that approximately 510 cases reported by consumers of ECG, NEDCo, and GWCL remain unresolved.

In the Eastern, Western, Greater Accra, Central, Volta, and Ashanti regions, ECG received a total of 3,546 complaints, of which 3,374 were resolved.

During the first six months of 2023, no case was filed against the water company in the Northern, Upper West, Upper East, or Bono regions.In the case of NEDCo, consumers in the Northern, Upper West, Upper East, and Bono regions filed 2,460 complaints, of which 2,300 were resolved.

During the period under review, NEDCo customers in the Eastern, Western Greater Accra, Central, Volta, and Ashanti regions did not file any complaints.

In the ten administrative regions of PURC, consumers filed 1,302 complaints against GWCL, of which 921 were resolved.

During the first six months of 2023, the commission also resolved 18 of the 85 complaints lodged against customers by ECG, NEDCo, and GWCL.
